Buying a diamond can be a little overwhelming if you're not sure what to
look for. Luckily, Dunkin Jewelers has an experienced sales staff to help
you through every step of the way. To get you started, provided below are
some basics you should know before purchasing a diamond.
|
SHAPE
Diamonds can be cut in a variety of shapes and sizes. At times, a particular mounting
may lend itself to one shape over another, but ultimately the choice between shapes is
that of the buyer's and his or her own personal preference.

CUT
The cut of a diamond determines how light is reflected and dispersed through it. If
a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow, the light will leak out the bottom and the
brilliance will be lost. However, if a diamond is cut to the ideal proportions, all
of the light entering from any direction will be reflected through the top giving it
it's sparkle.

COLOR
Most diamonds have slight tones of yellow or brown in them even though they may appear
colorless. Diamonds that are truly colorless are more rare than those with color. Therefore,
diamonds are graded according to the color grading scale below.

CLARITY
Nearly all diamonds contain slight imperfections or inclusions.
The clarity of a diamond is determined by the size, nature, location
and amount of inclusions detected. The clarity grading scale below
helps catagorize these characteristics.

|
CARAT
The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat is divided by
100 parts called points. For example, 1 carat= 1.00, 1/2 carat= .50. While
the size of a diamond may seem important, it is not the defining attribute of
a beautiful diamond. We encourage you to focus on the quality of the diamond
you are purchasing rather than just the size.

There are more expensive diamonds, but none more beautiful!
